Free TikTok API in 2026: What Is Really Free (and What Isn't)
Type “free TikTok API” into Google and you will find two kinds of answers. Some say TikTok gives you a free API. Others sell you a scraper with a free trial. Both are partly right.
Short answer: TikTok runs free official APIs, but none is a general public-data API. The Research API is free for qualifying researchers, the Display API shows only the authorising user’s own videos, and the ad library covers ads. Paid third-party data APIs fill the gap.
We read the vendor pricing pages on 2026-10-23 and did the maths. Nothing here comes from running anyone’s product, so there are no speed or success-rate numbers. One caveat matters more than usual: TikTok’s own developer pages did not load from our network today, so for those we used excerpts of the official pages from search results. Check the live pages before you apply for anything. Serpent sells one of the options below, so the arithmetic is shown and we say where a rival is better. Its basic TikTok call starts at $0.10 per 1,000.
The options at a glance (read 2026-10-23)
One row per option. Paid rates are in each vendor’s own billing unit, so read the second column before you compare the fourth.
| Option | Billing unit | Free part | Paid rate | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok Research API | Requests and records a day | Free for approved researchers; 1,000 requests a day | None | Non-profit research only; application and review |

| Data365 | Credit | 14-day trial on request | €300 or €850 a month | Monthly minimum |
TikTok’s official APIs, one by one
TikTok publishes several developer products. They are free in dollars, but each serves a narrow job behind an approval step. None lets an ordinary developer search public videos by keyword or hashtag.
The Display API and Login Kit: your users’ own content
The Display API works with Login Kit. A TikTok user signs in to your app and approves access. Your app can then read that user’s basic profile (the user.info.basic scope covers avatar and display name) and their public videos (video.list).
That is the whole model. The API reads the account that authorised you, not other accounts. Scopes beyond the basic one need approval, and TikTok runs an app review. It suits an app where creators connect their own accounts, not competitor tracking or hashtag research.
The Content Posting API: publishing, not reading
The Content Posting API lets an app upload videos or photos to a user’s account, with that user’s permission. Per TikTok’s content sharing guidelines, posts from an unaudited client are limited to private viewing, and an audit lifts that. It publishes content and does not help you read data.
The Research API: free, but only for qualifying researchers
The Research Tools are the closest thing to a free public-data API from TikTok. They are free. They are also restricted.
- Who can apply. The excerpts we could read list academic institutions working on a not-for-profit basis in the US, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland. Read the live page for current eligibility. Commercial users, creators and advertisers are not the audience.
- What you submit. A research proposal, your funding, evidence of ethical review and an endorsement letter. A regular developer account does not unlock it. Third parties report that decisions take around four weeks; we could not confirm that on TikTok’s pages.
- The quota. The FAQ gives 1,000 requests a day and up to 100,000 records a day. Video and comment calls can return 100 records per request. The quota resets at midnight UTC. On increases the FAQ says “We can’t grant exceptions.”
So the Research API is a fine answer if you are a qualifying academic. If you run a business, an agency or a SaaS product, it is not for you.
The Commercial Content API: ads only
The Commercial Content API searches TikTok’s ad library by advertiser or keyword. You apply for access. It covers EEA countries (not the UK or Switzerland). It helps with ad transparency, not organic videos, profiles or hashtags.
The rules that come with them
Using these APIs means agreeing to TikTok’s Developer Terms of Service, and researchers accept separate research terms. We are not lawyers and make no claim about what the terms allow for your project. One point is worth knowing.
- Each product has its own limits. A product approved for one purpose is not a licence for another.
If your plan involves a third-party data service, read TikTok’s terms and the vendor’s, and ask your own counsel. This guide teaches no way around any restriction.
Open-source TikTok tools
Free community code exists. The best-known is an unofficial Python wrapper, TikTok-Api on GitHub. It is free, and you run it yourself.
That is also the catch. It is unofficial, so nothing guarantees it keeps working when TikTok changes its site. We did not run it, and we cannot say how often it breaks. The terms question above applies too. For a weekend experiment it may be fine. For a product with customers, you own every outage.
The near-free TikTok data APIs, one by one
When the official route is closed, the practical choices are paid APIs with a free allowance or a cheap pay-as-you-go rate. We list Serpent first, then the rest in no particular order. Every figure is from the vendor’s page on 2026-10-23.
1. Serpent API
- Free: A free account gets 10 free calls, shared across all Serpent services. TikTok calls can spend them, except the optional media surcharge. You also get one free demo run a day on the TikTok API page without signing up. That is small. Bright Data’s 5,000 monthly records and EnsembleData’s 50 units a day go further for testing.
- Paid: A basic call (
/profileor/videowith noinclude_*option) costs $0.10 per 1,000 on Default. A single $100 deposit moves new credit to $0.09 (Growth), and $500 or $1,000 to $0.07 (Scale and Enterprise). The pricing page has the TikTok rows. - Enriched calls: Any
include_*option, plus/hashtag,/searchand/music, bill at $3.00 per 1,000 at the defaultlimit=30. The price scales with depth:limit=180, the synchronous maximum, is 2.5 times that, or $7.50 per 1,000 calls. Each extra field group adds 20%. One enriched call returns a whole list for one charge, so the per-item price falls aslimitgrows, as long as the items are delivered. - Media:
include_mediais a surcharge added on top: $10.00 per 1,000 on Default. A basic video call with media is $10.10 per 1,000. It is never free-pool eligible. - Commitment: The first deposit is $10 minimum, which buys 100,000 Default basic calls by our arithmetic. There is no subscription, and deposited credits do not expire. Promotional bonus credits do, after 30 days.
- What basic returns: A profile call returns the handle,
user_idandsec_uid, nickname, biography,bio_link,verified,private_account, commerce flags, privacy settings, and astatsobject with follower, following, like, video and friend counts. A video call returns the caption, the author’s identity, music, hashtags, mentions, labels and astatsobject with plays, likes, comments, shares, collects and reposts. - What enriched adds: Posts, followers, following and liked lists on a profile, comments and related videos on a video, and the list endpoints for hashtags, keyword search and sounds. Every list uses one envelope with
items,result_count,has_more,next_cursor,truncated,restrictedandcomplete. - Watch out: Basic calls usually return in a few seconds, but the docs say enriched calls can take 20 to 40 seconds. A synchronous request may fail, and a failed call is refunded. The general async job form is currently unavailable. A list TikTok ended early is charged as an answer. A creator’s
regionis in practicenull. Avatar, cover and video links expire.
Cheapest? Not flatly. For basic profile and video calls, $0.10 on Default is below every per-request rate we read, and $0.07 at Scale is lower still. For enriched calls the picture changes: $3.00 per 1,000 at default depth is higher than the per-request prices at ScrapeCreators or TikHub, so those are cheaper if a request of theirs returns what you need. Units differ between vendors, so compare what one call returns.

2. ScrapeCreators
The ScrapeCreators page offers 100 free credits, and up to 7,000 bonus credits for actions such as starring its GitHub repo or leaving a review. Paid packs are $47 for 25,000 credits ($1.88 per 1,000) and $497 for 500,000 ($0.99 per 1,000). Credits never expire, there is no subscription, and one credit covers one request for most endpoints. Cached results cost nothing. The page does not say how many credits each TikTok endpoint uses. With the bonus tasks, it has the largest free allowance in this guide.
3. EnsembleData
EnsembleData sells monthly plans measured in daily units. The free trial is 50 units a day. Paid plans run from $100 a month for 1,500 units a day up to $1,400 for 50,000. Its table gives a user profile 1 unit, 10 user posts 1 unit, 20 hashtag or keyword results 1 unit, and full post information 2 units. The table is not labelled by product, so we matched rows by position. The page does not say how long the trial lasts.
4. TikHub
TikHub is pay as you go: $0.001 to $0.01 per request depending on the endpoint, with daily volume tiers that fall to $0.0005 above 30,000 requests a day. New accounts get $0.05 of free credit, about 50 requests, though some endpoints need paid balance. The minimum top-up is $5, with no subscription. TikTok endpoint prices are not printed, so we cannot give a TikTok-specific rate.
5. SociaVault and SocialCrawl
SociaVault gives 50 free credits and sells packs from $29 for 6,000 credits ($4.83 per 1,000) to $399 for 200,000 ($1.99 per 1,000). Credits never expire. The page does not state the TikTok credit cost. SocialCrawl gives 100 free credits and prices in pounds: £15 for 2,500 credits up to £299 for 150,000. Its TikTok page lists profile, post, search and hashtag calls at one credit each, and trending or full-profile calls at five.
6. Bright Data
Bright Data has the biggest recurring free allowance we read: 5,000 records a month with no card, renewing on the 1st. After that it is $1.50 per 1,000 records pay as you go, or $499 a month including 384,000 records and $1.30 per 1,000 beyond. Its TikTok scrapers cover profiles, posts, comments, followers, hashtags and TikTok Shop. The page does not define a “record” for TikTok.
7. Apify
Apify’s TikTok Scraper is one of many TikTok actors in its store. It is priced per event, “from $1.70” per 1,000 results. Video downloads, transcripts, AI descriptions and filters cost extra, at prices the page does not print. Apify’s Free plan includes $5 of usage a month with no card, and Starter is $19 a month. Other actors in the store price differently. A comparison we published in August listed a keyword-search actor at $0.15 per 1,000 results, and we did not re-read those pages today, so a cheaper actor may exist for a narrow job.
8. TikAPI and Data365
TikAPI renders its pricing with JavaScript, so we could not read it directly. A search excerpt of the page shows a 5-day trial, then $29 a month for 300 requests a day, $79 for 2,000 and $189 for 10,000. Treat that as unconfirmed. Data365 is the enterprise end: €300 a month for 500,000 credits, €850 for 1,000,000, and a 14-day trial through a contact form. A post costs 1 credit, a search 7, a profile with info 9.
What free really costs you
A free route costs nothing on the invoice and plenty elsewhere. These are the costs we would budget for.
Your time
Applying to the Research API means a proposal, an endorsement letter and a wait that third parties put at around four weeks. A Display API app needs a review. An open-source wrapper needs upkeep and a fix whenever it breaks. If an engineer’s hours cost more than a month of a paid API, the free route is not free.
Reliability and support
Free community tools come with no uptime promise and no support desk. Paid APIs are not magic either: even on Serpent, enriched TikTok calls can take 20 to 40 seconds, and TikTok can end a list early. The difference is that you can ask a vendor, get a refund on a failed call, and read an envelope that says whether a list was truncated or restricted.
Scope
A free official API answers the question it was built for. The Display API answers “what did this user post?” for a user who signed in. It cannot answer “what are the top videos under this hashtag?” Write down the fields and accounts you need before you build, and check the option can return them.
Terms
Every route has rules. The official APIs have approval conditions and usage terms. Third-party services and open-source tools raise the terms question above, and the vendor’s own terms apply on top. Ask your own counsel before you build a product on them.
Cost at 1K, 10K, 100K and 1M requests
This is arithmetic from the published rates above, per month, for one profile-sized request each. We ignored free allowances, tax and extras, and used the cheapest pack or plan combination that covers the volume. Billing units differ, so read the notes under the table.

How to read it
- Packs and plans distort small volumes. ScrapeCreators and SociaVault look dear at 1,000 requests because you buy a pack. EnsembleData’s $100 and Data365’s €300 are monthly floors, good value only if you use the allowance.
- Serpent basic is lowest per call, for basic calls. $0.10 per 1,000 on Default compares with $0.99 to $1.88 at ScrapeCreators, $1.50 at Bright Data and $1 at TikHub’s entry rate. TikHub’s best tier, $0.50 per 1,000 above 30,000 requests a day, is higher still than Serpent’s $0.07 at Scale, though its TikTok endpoint prices were not on its page.
- Enriched is a different product. At $3.00 per 1,000 calls, an enriched Serpent call costs more per request than the packs above. It can still cost less per item, because one call returns up to 180 items. Serpent’s own page shows $0.042 per 1,000 delivered items at
limit=180on Default, assuming every requested item arrives. Short lists cost more per item, and the charge follows thelimityou asked for, not the items returned. - One request is not one record everywhere. EnsembleData’s unit returns 10 posts or 20 hashtag results, and Data365 charges 9 credits for a profile with info.
How to choose
- You are a qualifying academic or non-profit researcher. Apply for the Research API first. It is free and first-party. Plan for the review time and the 1,000-requests-a-day quota.
- You build an app where creators connect their own accounts. Use Login Kit and the Display API.
- You need an ad library. Use the Commercial Content API, remembering it covers the EEA only.
- You need to look up profiles and videos at scale. Serpent’s basic calls are the lowest per call among the rates we read. ScrapeCreators, TikHub and Bright Data suit small jobs too.
- You need hashtag, search or sound lists. Serpent prices by the depth you ask for, others per request or per record. Run your real request at two vendors and compare the bill.
- You need a steady daily feed with a support contact. A monthly plan such as EnsembleData’s or Data365’s may suit you better than credits.
- You only want to experiment. Use the free trials first. Our 10 calls cover ten basic lookups, so Bright Data’s or EnsembleData’s larger allowance suits a longer test.
Quick start and migration
Each call is a plain GET request with your key in one header. These two calls come from the TikTok API page: a basic profile, then a hashtag list at the maximum depth.
curl "https://apiserpent.com/api/tiktok/profile?username=zachking&country=us" \
-H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
curl "https://apiserpent.com/api/tiktok/hashtag?tag=cottagecore&limit=180&country=us" \
-H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
And the profile call in Python. No include_* option is set, so it bills at the flat basic rate:
import os, requests
r = requests.get("https://apiserpent.com/api/tiktok/profile",
params={"username": "zachking", "country": "us"},
headers={"X-API-Key": os.environ["SERPENT_API_KEY"]},
timeout=60)
profile = r.json()
print(profile["username"], profile["verified"], profile["stats"]["follower_count"])
Run it once in the playground to see the JSON first. The API docs list every parameter. Three habits will save you pain:
- Read the list envelope before the items. Check
truncated, restrictedandcomplete. A closed liked tab returns successfully and empty, andsettings.liked_videos_publictells you whether that is expected. - Key records by ID. Use
user_id,sec_uidandvideo_id, never an avatar or media link, because those expire. - Set
limiton purpose. On enriched calls it sets the depth and the price. Start low, then raise it.
For more depth, see our comparison of TikTok scraping APIs by depth (check its rates against our pricing page), and our guides to building a TikTok data pipeline in Python, tracking a hashtag without inventing a trend and which TikTok video fields to save. If you are comparing other platforms, we also wrote about a free Instagram API and a free YouTube search API.
Limits and unknowns
- We could not open TikTok’s pages. Every TikTok-side fact comes from search excerpts of the official pages, some of them weeks old. Eligibility, quotas and regions can change. Read the live pages.
- We did not test anything. Every competitor figure is from its published page on 2026-10-23. Prices and allowances change, so treat the numbers as dated.
- Units. SociaVault and TikHub do not print TikTok credit or request costs, Bright Data does not define a record, and Apify’s add-on prices were not on the page we could read.
- Free tiers. We could not confirm every vendor’s free allowance covers its TikTok endpoints.
- Legal questions. We make no claim about whether any route fits TikTok’s terms for your project. Ask counsel.
- Our interest. Serpent sells one of these options and we wrote the post, so redo any sum yourself from the linked pages.
FAQ
Is there a free TikTok API?
Yes, in a narrow sense. TikTok offers free official APIs, but none is a general public-data API. The Research API needs approval as a qualifying researcher, the Display API reads only the signed-in user’s own content, and the Commercial Content API covers EEA ads. For public data at scale you need a paid service.
Is the TikTok Research API free, and who can use it?
It is free, with a published quota of 1,000 requests and up to 100,000 records a day. Access is for qualifying researchers working on a not-for-profit basis. Third parties report that the review takes around four weeks, which we could not confirm. Commercial users are not the audience. Check the live page for current eligibility.
Can the TikTok Display API pull other people’s videos?
No. It returns the profile and public videos of the user who signed in to your app and approved the scopes. It is not built for browsing other accounts, hashtags or search results. For that you need a different kind of data service.
Is there a free TikTok scraper API?
There are free trials, not free scale. ScrapeCreators gives 100 credits, SociaVault 50, SocialCrawl 100, Bright Data 5,000 records a month and Apify $5 a month. Serpent gives 10 free calls on its TikTok data API. Open-source wrappers are free but unofficial, and you run and maintain them yourself.
What is the cheapest TikTok API alternative?
For basic profile and video calls, Serpent is lowest per call among the rates we read: $0.10 per 1,000 on Default, down to $0.07 on Scale. For enriched list calls, $3.00 per 1,000 is higher than some per-request prices, so it depends on what one call returns. Units differ, so compare real requests.
Do I need to check TikTok’s terms before using a TikTok data API?
Yes. We cannot tell you what is allowed for your project. That depends on TikTok’s terms, the data service’s terms, your jurisdiction and what you collect. Read the terms, and ask your own counsel before you build.
