Which SERP APIs Actually Return Google AI Overviews? I Compared 6 (2026)
Bottom line up front: Google's AI Overview is now the most-watched feature on the results page, but not every SERP API hands it back to you in structured JSON. I went through the live documentation of six providers to see which actually return the AI Overview block — and how. The short version:
- Return AI Overviews: Serpent API, SerpApi, DataForSEO, Scrapingdog and Bright Data all expose AI Overview content in their structured responses.
- Does not (documented): Serper — the lightweight, Google-only option — returns organic results, knowledge graph, answer box and People Also Ask, but no documented structured AI Overview output.
- The real differences are in how each one returns it (dedicated endpoint vs. inline field vs. parameter) and in the adjacent AI features — AI Mode, AI rank tracking — that sit next to it.
One honest caveat up front, true for every provider: an AI Overview only comes back when Google actually serves one. Google does not show an AI Overview for every query, and coverage varies by topic and region. No API can manufacture an Overview that Google did not display — so "supports AI Overview" means "returns it when present," not "returns one every time."
The 6 providers at a glance
| Provider | AI Overview | People Also Ask | Google AI Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serpent API | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | AI rank tracking* |
| SerpApi | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| DataForSEO | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Scrapingdog | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Bright Data | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | Not documented |
| Serper | Not documented | ✓ Yes | ✕ No |
*Serpent API does not expose a Google AI Mode endpoint; instead it offers AI rank tracking across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity — a different way to measure visibility in AI answers.
The headline is that AI Overview support has become table stakes for full-featured structured SERP APIs — five of six return it. The dividing line is no longer "does it support AIO" but "how cleanly, and what AI features surround it." Serper is the one that lags here, which is the trade-off for being the lightest and most Google-focused of the group.
How each provider returns the AI Overview
"Yes" hides a lot of variation. Here is what each one actually gives you:
- SerpApi — a dedicated AI Overview endpoint, and the block can also appear inline with organic results. It additionally ships a separate Google AI Mode endpoint, so AI Overview and AI Mode are distinct, well-documented outputs.
- DataForSEO — returns an
ai_overviewelement inside its Advanced SERP endpoints, supports AI Overviews that surface within People Also Ask, and exposes a dedicated AI Mode search type. A parameter controls whether the Overview is loaded. - Scrapingdog — a dedicated AI Overview API plus an AI Overview block in its Google SERP output, and a separate AI Mode endpoint. Strong coverage for a mid-market provider.
- Bright Data — captures the AI Overview text automatically in its parsed SERP output, with a parameter to control layout, and markets a dedicated Google AI Overview product.
- Serpent API — includes Google's AI Overview content directly in the Google SERP response, alongside People Also Ask, so you get it from the same call as organic results — no second request.
- Serper — returns organic results, knowledge graph, answer box and
peopleAlsoAsk, but does not document a structured AI Overview field. If AI Overview JSON is a hard requirement, Serper is not the pick.
If you want a step-by-step on pulling the Overview out of a response and using it, we wrote a dedicated how-to: extract Google AI Overviews with an API. This post is the provider-coverage companion to that guide.
AI Overview vs People Also Ask vs AI Mode
These three features get lumped together, but they are distinct outputs and providers support them unevenly:
- AI Overview — the AI-generated summary box on a normal results page. Five of the six here return it.
- People Also Ask (PAA) — the expandable related-questions block. Universally supported across all six, including Serper.
- Google AI Mode — Google's separate conversational search surface with query fan-out. Only SerpApi, DataForSEO and Scrapingdog expose it as a dedicated output today.
The distinction matters because they answer different questions. AI Overview tells you what Google is summarising on the main SERP; AI Mode reflects a different, conversational surface entirely. We unpacked how the two diverge in AI Overviews vs AI Mode citations and how the conversational surface expands a single query in Google AI Mode query fan-out, explained.
A different angle: measuring visibility inside AI answers
Returning the AI Overview block is one job. A related but separate one is tracking whether your brand shows up inside AI answers over time. Serpent API is the only provider in this comparison that pairs SERP-level AI Overview data with AI rank tracking across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity — so you can monitor both the Google AI Overview and the wider set of AI assistants from one provider. If your goal is generative-engine visibility rather than raw SERP capture, that combination is worth weighing. For the optimisation side of the same problem, see our AI Overview optimization guide.
Which should you choose for AI Overview data?
Choose Serpent API if…
You want AI Overview and PAA in the same Google call across Google, Bing, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo, at the lowest cost, and you also want to track brand visibility across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity from one place.
Choose SerpApi or DataForSEO if…
You want the most granular, separately-documented AI Overview and AI Mode outputs, and you need them across many engines (SerpApi) or alongside SEO sub-APIs (DataForSEO).
Choose Scrapingdog or Bright Data if…
You want solid AI Overview coverage at mid-market pricing (Scrapingdog) or inside a broader large-scale scraping platform with success-only billing (Bright Data).
Skip Serper for AI Overview if…
Structured AI Overview JSON is a requirement. Serper is excellent for fast, simple Google organic + PAA, but it does not document an AI Overview field. For the full trade-off, see Serpent API vs SerpApi vs DataForSEO vs Serper.

FAQ
Which SERP APIs return Google AI Overviews?
Serpent API, SerpApi, DataForSEO, Scrapingdog and Bright Data all return AI Overview content in their structured responses. Serper does not document structured AI Overview output. Availability depends on whether Google serves an Overview for the query.
Does SerpApi return AI Overviews?
Yes — through a dedicated endpoint and inline with organic results, plus a separate Google AI Mode endpoint.
Does DataForSEO return AI Overviews?
Yes — an ai_overview element in its Advanced SERP endpoints, AI Overviews inside PAA, and a dedicated AI Mode search type.
Why doesn't the AI Overview always appear?
Because Google does not show one for every query. AI Overviews trigger for certain queries and vary by region and over time; an API returns it only when Google serves it.
What's the difference between AI Overview and AI Mode?
AI Overview is the summary box on a normal results page. AI Mode is Google's separate conversational search surface. Some APIs expose both as distinct outputs.
Does Serpent API return AI Overviews?
Yes — in the Google SERP response alongside People Also Ask, with AI rank tracking across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity available too.
